Fly Away Flu! Shoo! (with Essential Oils)

"The Flu" is a catch-all phrase for any number of identified and unidentified viruses. These bugs generally involve some combination of fever, fatigue, coughs, colds, headaches, achey muscles, intestinal 'issues', nausea, and/or vomiting.

Let's get the treatment happening QUICKLY-- raise your immune levels and beat back that bug! The following information is taken from The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood. Be sure that you use only PURE therapeutic-grade essential oils-- don't use cheap essential oils that have been distilled using chemicals or that are full of chemical additives!

Right at the outset if you feel alternating chills and fevers, like you are 'coming down with something'-- get into a warm bath to which you have added:
1/2 C. Epsom Salts or Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
(to which you add the following:

5 drops Melaleuca (Tea Tree)essential oil
2 drops Lavender essential oil
2 drops Thyme essential oil

After your bath, have a nice full body massage with the following:

1 teaspoon , Virgin Coconut Oil or other pure nut or vegetable oil
2 drops Melaleuca
3 drops Eucalyptus

Go back to bed. If you need some calming good music, I'm sure there is even something like "Music for the Flu":)

Spray the bedroom with Lavender or Thyme

And/Or Diffuse with any of the lovely citrus essential oils.

Make yourself the following hot and soothing drink:

Combine 1 drop of Clove essential oil and 1 drop of Lavender essential oil (or a drop of Lemon oil.) USE JUST ONE DROP OF THE BLEND in a cup of hot water and honey or Stevia. Sip slowly.

Some other oils that are helpful:

(I carry this in my purse for people who ask me for aspirin to try)

As I have stated numerous times in blogs (and ad nauseum in person, to my friends and family who might just be sick of hearing it) diarrhea is just the body's way of expelling toxins quickly and it doesn't make sense to "treat" against diarrhea, other than FASTING and RESTING and SIPPING clear fluids as required. Watch how your pet deals with illness-- generally refuses food and may have a drink of water here or there-- usually will just skulk off somewhere and sleep until the illness runs its course. Stay warm, calm, positive as possible.

Always remember that less is more with synergistic substances like essential oils... so start with a drop.  I didn't used to say this, but recently I suggest that you dilute oils with coconut oil (or other carrier) before putting on your skin.

Keep your oils well out of the reach of small children.  Diffusing at a distance of at least 6 feet from a sick child and applying with a carrier oil to the bottom of children's feet is the safest procedure (and only a small amount-- they are not adults).

Consult your health practitioner. My suggestions are just made up of what works for me and not intended to be medical advice.
Here are some other experiences people have had with combatting the Flu with the
use of essential oils:

Title: No flu in over six years
Author: Eleanor Rosenthal

In 1999 I had a bad flu in September. I had a flu shot in November and in December, three months after the first flu, I passed the Millenium event in bed with yet another bad flu. A couple of weeks later a friend introduced me to [therapeutic essential oils] and I haven't had the flu since. That's over six years. And it's not because I take specific oils for flu prevention. I think it's just that I take enough different oils for different purposes so that, one way or another, my system seems to have become too strong to succumb to the flu.

Title: The flu bug hit hard
Author: Chris Anderson

On Father's Day (when we had 23 people for dinner), I had the flu hit me that everyone else had gotten in our area. They had suffered for 2 weeks with it.

The symptoms were a stomach ache that felt like a person had huge balls in them. You constantly wanted to throw up, but couldn't or could...but 'that feeling of throwing up' was constantly there. It would hit hard with nausea and fever, then go away for a few days only to come back a week later.

So it hit me, and I didn't have time on Father's Day to be sick! My wonderful daughter and daughter-in-law said, 'Mom! How many back rubs with oils have you given this family?! Come on upstairs and we're gong to rub you down.' I chose Thieves and Melaleuca alternifolia and [another blend]. They put over 100 drops on my back and feet. When they hit the acupuncture points for the stomach.....whoa....was that ever sore! We rubbed oregano there. And I put [yet another blend] all over my stomach. 30 minutes later all symptoms were gone...

Title: Flu symptoms with sore throat
Author: Gedaliah Genin

My 14 year old son woke up with a fever, body aches, a sore neck and sore throat. He felt like he had blisters in his throat he said. I put five drops of Valor on his back and a few drops on both his feet then put a few drops of Thieves on his feet and two drops of Peppermint on his back. I put two drops of Thieves on his throat as well. I diffused Lemongrass, then tucked him under the covers.

Two hours later later he woke up sweating profusely. I had him drink fruit juice, changed his clothes then layered Valor on his back again, with one drop of Thyme and one drop of Oregano on his feet. By 4 PM that day he wanted to play his tennis match. He looked and felt great. Of course we waited on the tennis and most amazing the blisters were also gone! Great job Noah!
